Shockwave Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction in Manotick
Manotick is a village of about 5,300 people. Which is exactly why so few men here walk into their family doctor’s office on Bridge Street and say the words out loud. The pharmacist knows your wife. The receptionist coaches your son’s hockey team. So the problem goes unmentioned for an average of two to three years — and in the meantime it quietly gets worse.
FocusWave Clinic treats erectile dysfunction with focused shockwave therapy (FSWT) — a non-invasive, drug-free protocol delivered on Health Canada Class II licensed devices. Six 20-minute sessions. No pills, no needles, no incisions, no recovery time. Our Ottawa clinic is roughly 25 minutes up Prince of Wales Drive from Manotick Village — far enough from home that nobody you know is sitting in the waiting room.
You Are Not the Exception. You Are the Statistic.
The largest Canadian study on this — Grover et al., published in Archives of Internal Medicine in 2006 — screened men over 40 in primary care practices across the country. 49.4% met the diagnostic criteria for erectile dysfunction. Roughly half. In a Manotick demographic that skews older, married and professional, the real local number is unlikely to be lower.
Here is the part most men are never told: vascular disease is implicated in 70–80% of ED cases. ED is often the first symptom of arterial disease, appearing three to five years before a cardiac event. The same research found men with even mild ED had markedly higher rates of hypertension (26.1% vs 17.9%), diabetes (13.6% vs 6.7%) and obesity (33.5% vs 16.4%) than the general Canadian male population.
A prescription masks that signal. It does not address it. That distinction is the entire reason focused shockwave therapy exists.
The Biology: Why Blood Flow Fails — and What FSWT Actually Does
An erection is a hydraulic event. It requires healthy endothelium, intact nitric oxide signalling, and penile arteries wide enough to fill the corpora cavernosa faster than blood drains out. Age, smoking, diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol all attack that system the same way: micro-plaque accumulates, arteries narrow, nitric oxide production drops. The result is weaker, less reliable, shorter-lasting erections.
Focused shockwave therapy delivers precisely targeted acoustic pressure waves into penile tissue. The mechanical stress triggers a biological repair cascade:
- VEGF and eNOS upregulation → the signalling proteins that drive new blood vessel formation
- Neovascularisation → new capillary networks form in treated tissue
- Micro-plaque disruption → existing arteries regain calibre
- Progenitor cell recruitment → endothelial tissue regenerates
The distinction that matters: a PDE5 inhibitor borrows function for four hours. Shockwave therapy works on the tissue itself. Nothing is cut, nothing is injected, and nothing is taken daily.
Focused vs. Radial — Ask Before You Book Anywhere
Not all “shockwave” is shockwave. Many clinics and nearly every home device use radial pressure waves, which disperse energy at the skin surface and lose intensity with depth. Focused shockwave concentrates energy at a set depth inside the tissue — which is what the published clinical trials used. If you are comparing providers in the Ottawa area, ask which one they operate. It is the single most important question you can ask.
What the Evidence Says — Including the Limits
We would rather you arrive with accurate expectations than oversold ones.
- A systematic review and meta-analysis presented at the SMSNA 2024 Fall Scientific Meeting pooled 16 studies covering 907 patients. Low-intensity shockwave therapy alone produced a mean IIEF improvement of 3.4 points versus control (95% CI 2.1–4.9). For reference, a 4-point change on the IIEF-EF domain is generally considered the threshold of a clinically meaningful difference.
- A 2024 protocol paper in the International Journal of Impotence Research found that session count should scale with severity — roughly 6 sessions for mild ED, and 12 for moderate-to-severe cases. This is why we assess before we quote a plan, rather than selling everyone the same package.
- Response is strongest in vasculogenic ED — ED caused by blood flow. Men whose ED is primarily neurological, post-surgical, hormonal or psychological respond less predictably, and we will tell you that at the consultation rather than after you have paid.
- Safety profile is excellent. Across the published trials, serious adverse events are essentially absent. The treatment requires no anaesthetic and no downtime.
- Honest caveat: researchers continue to call for larger multicentre trials with longer follow-up. Durability beyond 12 months is not yet firmly established, which is why we offer maintenance sessions rather than claiming a permanent cure.
Are You a Good Candidate?
Likely yes if:
- Your ED has developed gradually rather than overnight
- Pills work but you dislike the side effects, the timing, or the dependency
- Pills have stopped working as well as they used to
- You have vascular risk factors — hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, a history of smoking
- You want to treat the cause rather than manage the symptom
- You cannot take PDE5 inhibitors because of nitrates or another interaction
Less suited if:
- Your ED began abruptly and is situational — this often points to a psychological or relationship component that responds better to other care
- You have a penile implant already in place
- You have an active urogenital infection or untreated malignancy in the treatment field
- You are on anticoagulants or have a coagulation disorder — possible, but requires clearance
The consultation exists to sort this out. It is free, it takes about 30 minutes, and if you are not a good candidate we will say so.
Your Treatment Timeline
Step 1 — Free Consultation
In-clinic, virtual or by phone. History, IIEF-5 baseline scoring, risk-factor review, and a frank conversation about whether FSWT is the right tool for your case. No charge, no obligation.
Step 2 — Weeks 1–6: Treatment
Six sessions, one per week, 20 minutes each. You stay clothed apart from the treatment area, you are awake and comfortable throughout, and you drive yourself home. Most men book a session over a lunch hour and go straight back to work.
Step 3 — Weeks 8–12: Response Window
Angiogenesis is a biological process, not a switch. Improvement typically builds over the 4–12 weeks after the final session rather than during treatment. Some men notice change by session four; others at week ten. Both are normal.
Step 4 — Reassessment
We re-score your IIEF-5 and compare it to baseline. If you have responded well, we discuss spacing out maintenance. If your response was partial, we discuss additional sessions at the reduced maintenance rate.
No downtime. Walk out of the clinic, drive back down Prince of Wales, and make your tee time at Manderley or a round at Rideauview. Nothing about the appointment shows.
FocusWave vs. the Alternatives
| Oral Medication | Injections (ICI) | Vacuum Device | Focused Shockwave | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Invasiveness | Low | High | Moderate | None |
| Timing required | 30–60 min before | 5–20 min before | Immediately before | None — spontaneous |
| Duration of effect | 4–36 hours | ~1 hour | ~30 minutes | Months |
| Treats the cause | No | No | No | Yes — vascular |
| Common side effects | Headache, flushing, congestion | Pain, bruising, scarring risk | Numbness, bruising | Minimal |
| Ongoing cost | $800–$1,200 / year, indefinitely | $600–$900 / year, indefinitely | $300–$600 one-time | $2,500 one-time course |
Shockwave therapy and medication are not mutually exclusive. Some men use both during treatment and taper off the pills afterwards. That is a perfectly good outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it hurt?
No. Most men describe a light tapping or tingling sensation. No anaesthetic is used and no anaesthetic is needed. You can drive yourself home immediately afterwards.
How soon will I notice a difference?
Some men notice change during the treatment course, but the honest answer is that most improvement appears in the 4–12 weeks after the final session, as new blood vessels form. This is regeneration, not a pharmaceutical effect — it takes time.
How long do the results last?
Published follow-up data most commonly runs to 12 months, with a proportion of men maintaining gains beyond that. Durability past one year is not yet firmly established in the literature, which is why we offer maintenance sessions at 50% off rather than promising a permanent cure. Managing your vascular risk factors — blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, smoking — meaningfully extends results.
Will I still need my pills?
Many men reduce or stop their PDE5 inhibitor after a successful course. Others continue at a lower dose with better effect than before. Both are common outcomes, and neither is a failure.
Is it covered by OHIP?
No. Some private insurance plans and Health Spending Accounts will reimburse — we provide detailed receipts. Financing from about $100 per month is also available.
Is this the same as the machines advertised online?
No. Home and consumer devices use radial pressure waves, which dissipate at the skin surface. We use focused shockwave on Health Canada Class II licensed equipment, delivering energy at a controlled depth — the technology used in the published clinical trials.
How private is this?
Entirely. Our clinic is in west Ottawa, not in Manotick, and no referral is required to book. You do not need to involve your family doctor unless you choose to. Records are confidential.
Is there anything that makes me ineligible?
An existing penile implant, active urogenital infection, or untreated malignancy in the treatment area. Anticoagulant use requires clearance but is not an automatic exclusion. The free consultation determines this before you commit to anything.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly, and the consultation is free.
