Shockwave Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction in Ottawa

FocusWave Clinic is an Ottawa men’s health clinic offering focused shockwave therapy (FSWT) — a non-invasive, drug-free treatment for erectile dysfunction that targets the underlying blood flow problem rather than masking it.

Our clinic is located on Carling Avenue, central to the city and accessible from Centretown, the Glebe, Westboro, Hintonburg, Alta Vista, Nepean, Barrhaven, Rockcliffe Park, Kanata, Stittsville and Orléans. Parking is available on site.

Erectile Dysfunction Is a Vascular Problem First

Most erectile dysfunction is not psychological and not simply a matter of age. It is a circulation problem. An erection requires healthy arteries and a healthy endothelium — the vessel lining that signals blood flow to increase. High blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, smoking, and inactivity all degrade that system over time.

This is also why erectile dysfunction deserves to be taken seriously as a health signal. The arteries supplying erectile tissue are narrower than the coronary arteries and often show trouble first — sometimes years before any cardiac symptom appears. Any man presenting with new erectile difficulty should have his blood pressure, blood sugar and lipids assessed, whether or not he pursues treatment with us.

How Focused Shockwave Therapy Works

Oral medications amplify a nitric oxide signal your body still has to generate. They are effective for many men, but they do not repair tissue — which is why their benefit can fade as the underlying vascular problem progresses.

Focused low-intensity shockwave therapy takes a different approach. Targeted acoustic pulses delivered into the erectile tissue stimulate:

  • Angiogenesis — growth factor release supporting new microvessel formation
  • Endothelial repair — improved function of the lining that regulates blood flow
  • Tissue remodelling — regenerative activity within the erectile tissue itself

Sessions take about 20 minutes, require no anaesthetic, and carry no recovery period. Effects develop over weeks.

Why Focused, Not Radial

We use the Storz Medical DUOLITH SD1, a focused electromagnetic device. Focused shockwaves concentrate energy at a defined tissue depth; radial devices disperse pressure waves near the surface. The published clinical trials in erectile dysfunction have overwhelmingly used focused equipment, and the two technologies should not be treated as interchangeable when comparing clinics.

What the Evidence Supports — and What It Doesn't

Focused LI-ESWT has been examined in randomised controlled trials and several meta-analyses for vasculogenic erectile dysfunction. The literature supports meaningful improvement in erectile function scores for many men, with the strongest responses in milder to moderate disease and reasonably preserved vascular health.

Where it is weaker: men with severe long-standing disease, poorly controlled diabetes, or significant nerve injury — including after prostatectomy — respond less consistently. Benefits are not permanent for everyone and some men choose maintenance sessions. We would rather tell you this before you commit than after.

Your Path Through Treatment

  • Complimentary assessment — history, medications, cardiovascular risk factors, and what you have already tried
  • Baseline measurement — a standardised erectile function score, so progress is measured rather than guessed at
  • Treatment sessions — roughly 20 minutes each, no downtime, drive yourself home
  • Reassessment — we re-measure and discuss whether more sessions, or a different approach, is warranted

Early morning, evening and weekend appointments are available. See our pricing and financing options.
